Dr Wendy van Zuijlen is a Postdoctoral Scientist in the School of Medical Sciences at the University of New South Wales. She completed her PhD in immunology at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland in 2009. Dr van Zuijlen then undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Montreal in Canada, funded by a fellowship from the Societé Québécoise d’Hypertension Artérielle, working on cell signalling and the immune response to viral infection. At the beginning of 2013, she returned to Australia and joined the Virology Research Laboratory to combine her interests in immunology and virology.
Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection in developed countries. CMV infection of the fetus occurs in utero from transplacental transmission and has been associated with birth defects and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including still birth.
Dr Wendy van Zuijlen has a strong interest in understanding the pathogenesis of congenital cytomegalovirus infection. Her current research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms affected by CMV infection in placental cells. This knowledge will aid in designing therapeutics to prevent and treat CMV infection during pregnancy.
